1. Hongya Cave (洪崖洞) – The “Spirited Away” Icon

Imagine an 11-story traditional stilt house complex clinging to a steep cliff.

At night, when the golden lights turn on, it looks exactly like the bathhouse from Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.

• Why go: It is the undisputed symbol of Chongqing.
• Pro Tip: Do not take the elevator inside; the line is insane. Admire the full view from the Qiansimen Bridge or the 1st-floor road level.

2. Yangtze River Cableway (长江索道) – The “Flying Bus”

Before bridges were common, locals used this cable car to commute across the Yangtze. Now, it’s a vintage way to see the skyline.

3. Jiefangbei CBD (解放碑) – The Times Square

The spiritual center of the city.

4. Wulong Karst National Geology Park (武隆天坑地缝)

Film Location for “Transformers: Age of Extinction” . Huge natural limestone bridges, deep gorges, and ancient outposts. This is nature on a massive scale.

• The Highlight: The “Three Natural Bridges” and the glass viewing platform.

🚗 Logistics Reality Check: Wulong is 4 hours away from Chongqing by car. Taking the train + bus transfer is complicated for non-Chinese speakers.

5. Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻)

Thousands of religious statues carved into the cliffside dating back to the 7th century. The “Thousand-Hand Guanyin” (recently restored with gold leaf) is breathtaking.

💡Why go: It is the only World Heritage Site of its kind in the region.

6. Ciqikou Ancient Town (磁器口)

An ancient port town with Ming and Qing dynasty architecture.

It’s the best place to understand the history of the Yangtze River and the massive Dam project.
